 VERANZA JOUBERT & PHILIPPUS HUGO

Veranza Joubert was born in Heilbron, Free State. She studied at Stellenbosch University and obtained a B. Mus (Ed) and B. Mus Honours degree (cum laude), as well as two Piano performers’ Licentiates from UNISA (cum laude) and Royal Schools of Music respectively. While teaching in Cape Town, she also obtained a Masters in Music at UCT with Francois du Toit as piano lecturer. She has been involved with eisteddfod adjudication and has been part of the panel of examiners for Unisa practical examinations for the past decade. She enjoys chamber music most of all, and favourite composers include J S Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Fauré, Chopin, Liszt, Debussy and Ravel.

Philippus Hugo obtained the degrees BMus, BMus Hons (Cum Laude) and MMus (Cum Laude) in piano performing from the University of Stellenbosch under the guidance of Juliana de Villiers. He made his solo debut with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 16. During his student years, he regularly performed as soloist with the CTPO, Natal Philharmonic, Stellenbosch Symphony Orchestra and the Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra. In 1992 he was appointed to the post of official accompanist at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre. From 1994 until 2010 he was the official accompanist for the ABSA National Music Competition in Port Elizabeth and performed as official accompanist for the SANLAM National Music Competition in Cape Town. He is a regular accompanist for the ATKV Musique, Artscape Competition, UNISA gr8 and Overseas Bursary Competition as well as freelance accompanist for national arts festivals: KKNK, KKK, Vryfees, Hermanus Fine Arts Festival, Darling Voorkamerfest and the Greyton Classical Music Festival. He performed in 2011, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2024 as accompanist at the Maputo International Music Festival. From 2012 until 2016 he was the official accompanist for the Muziquante Competition. For his production of the opening concert at the Klein Karoo Klassiek festival in Oudtshoorn, in 2013, the production was nominated for a Fiesta Award for best classical concert at a national festival. He regularly adjudicates for various eisteddfods in South Africa. In 2012,2014, 2021, 2022, 2023. 2024 he was a guest artist at the Harare Music Festival in Zimbabwe. In 2014 he was appointed as a member of the board of examiners for UNISA. In 2000 he was appointed as official accompanist at the Conserve, University of Stellenbosch. In 2019 he served on the panel of adjudicators for the Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition and in 2022 and 2023 the Johan Vos National Piano Competition. He is currently enrolled for a PhD in Music at UFS.
